The Oncology Nurse Navigator guides patients with all forms of cancer through the healthcare system. Acting as a liaison between the patient, their family, and the medical team, they coordinate care, provide education, and eliminate logistical and financial barriers to treatment from diagnosis through survivorship. He/she will work in direct communication with oncology providers for coordination of care. This could include sitting in with providers on new patient visits and other follow up visits as warranted. All referrals received for Oncology/Hematology will be managed by the oncology nurse navigator. Likewise, referrals placed for these patients to receive care outside of WGH will also be the responsibility of the oncology nurse navigator. The oncology nurse navigator will have the authority to delegate appropriate duties as needed to trained staff within the department when tasks that require them to operate at a higher scope take priority. These tasks may include but are not limited to new patient chemo teaching, overseeing new patient appointments with providers, meeting with newly diagnoses cancer patients in other departments, etc. The oncology nurse navigator will serve as a back-up to the other oncology nurse navigator and will oversee those duties when they are out of office. It will be a priority for both oncology nurse navigators to coordinate their time off in a manner that allows for adequate navigator coverage on all business days throughout the year.
